This picture which was taken some time in the early 1960′s which has a lot of significance as far as women and Islam is concerned. Most of the world and a vast majority of  NGO’s are taking up causes to  raise a higher moral, social, or cultural level or condition among today’s women. I believe that women in our Jamat and in this case our village were given equal status and respect as men in most cases. Ladies were allowed to voice their opinion and participate in public speaking majority of the times.

I know of Kulsum bai Akbar Lanani,  she was in charge of our health center that operated out of the Jamat khana since 1970. Later on in the years about 1990 a dedicated infirmary was opened by the Aga khan health services.  Aminaben Mema ( mother of Noorji Mema Maknojia. House opposite Jamat Khana) was another female personality who took care of all expectant ladies and helped deliver babies at home. Back then in the early 60 and 70′s  there was no proper means of transportation to Sidhpur and local Doctors in the village were virtually  non existent.

Manpura- a brief history

Manpura is a small village located in Northern Gujarat, Taluka Vadgam, district Banaskhata. As far as I know we do not have any historical documentation either verbal or literary about our village. I encourage readers of this blog to talk to their elders about any historical facts or any vital info that they can gather on this little village. Manpura is geographically located 23°58’59″ North Latitude, and 81 o .29′ and 72°23’47″E and is about less than one square kilometer, to be more precise it is .6 sq km. The climate is semi arid. The temperatures in summer can go as high as 45 degrees C and low as 10 degrees C. As of now it is inhabited by less than 300 people the population can swell in summer to about 500 to 600 people.

Manpura is inhabited by a cross section of people from all sections of the Hindu faith including Waghris, Vankars, Thakors and Lavhars and only one section of the Shia Muslim community called “Momins” AKA “Moomnas”. Originally, several hundred years ago and up until 1930 the entire population were farmers and made a living tilling their land. Momins were some of the first to leave their village and headed to Mumbai for better opportunities. Some eventually left the Indian subcontinent and settled in various countries such as USA, Canada, Australia and UK.

According to Shakil Vazirali Bhandari and I quote “Our village name MANPURA mean’s Respect For All. Recently our village won the NIRMAL GAAM contest (staged by the central government)standing first in VADGAM district. Our Sarpanch Mr.Noormohmed Jiva Maknojia received the award & cash price from The PRESIDENT OF INDIA Mr.A P J ABDULKALAM at New Delhi.” Our village has produced Doctors, Entrepreneur, Engineers, CA’s or CPA’s and other professionals. In future posts I will make an attempt to document all those great hardworking people that make us proud.
